new heights

Squirt's already strong desire to explore, roam, and test (and expand) her limits has soared to new heights recently (in more ways than one). She wants to see everything, do everything, go everywhere. It's amazing (and terrifying and frustrating and... well, lots of things) to watch her bloom more every day as her language and physical skills grow exponentially. Right now, she is an unstoppable bundle of energy and, at least around Momma, a non-stop chatter box. If she can walk somewhere, she'll run (adorably, I might add; right now she runs with her entire body, pulling up her shoulders, twisting at the waist, and pumping her bent arms fervently). If she can step up onto something, she'll hop. She will find the most complicated path to get to her end point and take it. Rather symbolic for how she is climbing ever higher in her skills and understanding of the world, she is also literally climbing everything (I mean it - yesterday she tried to climb the stuccoed wall of our house and was very upset when she couldn't find a good hand hold). At parks right now, she will find the most challenging (and tallest) way up a play structure and scale it. Over and over and over, and always with beaming pride at the top. Any attempts to help, or even just spot her, are met with a wagging finger and firm "No, Mom, back!"  She can - and will - do it, and do it all, herself.

High five!

one more thing...
There is one more thing I want to scribe forever on my memory (via the unsinkable interwebs) related to Squirt's above-mentioned super zip; something I'm sure won't last much longer before she's on to new habits...

I work out at home. I've tried going to a gym, but it just doesn't work for me right now. I used to use kettlebells every few days - you know, back when you would sit Squirt down in one place and she'd, more or less stay there, or during those brief, almost mythical evenings that she'd actually go to bed before my bedtime - but I had to cut them out most of the time now that Squirt is always trying to "help" and join me in every activity. It's just flat-out dangerous! So I've regressed to body-weight exercises most of the time - stuff like pull-ups and plyomentrics. Since I don't really have any time at home without her around, I just do these quick workouts with her. For a while, it seemed that I did these workouts around her, but lately she has been more involved. When I say "ok, lets do a plank," she comes up right beside me - sometimes under me - and holds herself in a pretty perfect plank. We take turns doing pull/chin-ups (that's more for me than her; it gives me a break and those are HARD). Sometimes, when I'm doing push-ups or holding plank, she grins maliciously and crawls up on my back, commanding "again!" On a less evil note, the other day, as I thought I couldn't possibly squeeze out my last push-up, she started clapping and cheered "YAAAAY!" What a motivating little coach! She is also the cutest little bean when she does squats with me. I *usually* try to count my reps out loud for her, and sometimes she tries to count along with me. I don't think she has the concept of letters and numbers quite down, yet, because when she's counting out reps (or singing the ABC song, for that matter), she makes it up as she goes: "one, tree, five, B, twe've, two, X..." At the end, though, she often claps and does a little jig. While I may not be getting the toughest, most amazing workout out there, I wouldn't trade these moments for anything <3

Doing squats - look at that smile!

"Sit down, Mom!"
A little post-workout play time.

tent rocks

As promised, here are some of the pictures Dad-o took on our celebratory hike at Tent Rocks. On the way up to the overlook, Squirt hiked and climbed most of the way on her own, only hopping in the carrier on the really steep last stretch. She rode in the carrier on the way down, and fell asleep about halfway through! She marvelled at the tall canyon walls as she scrambled over every boulder she could get her hands on (regardless if it was actually in her path). She pointed out birds and trees and rocks and, in her super-secret toddler language, other marvellous things that I couldn't quite make out. The scenery was spectacular and unlike anything we'd ever seen before. It was the perfect setting to celebrate the life of such a spectacular person.

Climbing and hiking.

And exploring.

Hiking is hard work!

terrific twos

The start of Squirt's third year (well, you might call it her second, but, technically, she lived her first year before she even turned one, so I'm counting this as the start of her third) was terrific. She had quite an action-packed weekend. I could probably wax poetic about it, but will, instead, just write the basics in favor of more pictures (isn't a pictures supposed to be worth a thousand words, anyway?). On her birthday, she spent the afternoon at the park and then had her most favoritest of favorite dinners (pineapple, cranberry pork roast, if you wanna know), followed by Momma giving her a slew of Dr. Seuss books, to her delight. The following day, we went on a family hike to commemorate her birthday at Tent Rocks National Monument - somewhere none of us had ever been (pictures of which will be in a separate post). She hiked, scrambled, and explored, then fell asleep in her carrier as Momma hiked back down to the car. The weather was lovely, the hike beautiful, and the company charming. The NEXT day, some of Momma's dear friends pulled together a sweet little birthday party at the Botanical Garden - each person brought something different, from cupcakes to party hats to favors. On top of that, everyone brought delightful gifts. It couldn't have been more fun or picturesque! Squirt loved playing with her most special friends, blowing bubbles in the breeeze, and exploring the garden. Toward the end of the party, she decided it was time to kick it up a notch, and stripped down to her undershorts (which Momma had to convince her to keep on...). Squealing with laughter, she enthusiastically chased the ducks across the green. After that, the last day of her birthday weekend, her great-grandparents came through town to visit for the night. She was surprisingly excited to see them (generally, she hasn't been terribly thrilled to see them) and, literally bouncing off the walls, showed them how much zip she has hidden away in her teenseyness.

All in all, it was an absolutely lovely birthday; I couldn't have asked for a nicer party, better weather, or a more delightful little girl. Now onto the pictures!

The birthday! At the park and reading books.

It was windy...

Bear crawling up the steep wall leading to the slide.
She was very proud of herself at the top.

Super silly, super close up. She's super cute, boogers and all.

Her favorite right now is The ABC Book.

reminiscing

As this second year draws to a close, and I reminisce over the changes and growth that has taken place, I'm reminded how quickly things change. When Squirt hit a rough phase - like that period when she fought bedtime with horrific ferocity or when she threw epic, demonic tantrums every time I took her to the grocery store - I would always tell myself that it will change; it won't last forever. That is true, too, of the good things. As the minutes tick away, marching her ever closer to her terrific and terrible twos, I want to treasure those sweet little things she does that make me smile, those wonderful quirks that make her uniquely Squirt, but, like a shooting star, will be gone in the blink of an eye. So here are some reminisces of this past year, in no particular order.

 ~ ~ ~
In the shower, she delights in filling her mouth with water then squirting me in the face. She is always grins and giggles when she does this. Sometimes, she tries to be sneaky and holds it in her mouth for a long time, probably thinking I'll let my guard down. The surprised I act, the more delighted she becomes.

Right now, at this moment, her favorite foods are dark chocolate covered cranberries, string cheese, and the sorrel in the garden. This was not always so, and probably won't be the case next week. It's so fun to watch her unique tastes develop as she explores the culinary world.

Right now, she prefers to sit in my lap at dinner time. The other night, she sat in her own chair, but she had her stuffed bunny sitting on her lap. She fed him cauliflower.

She has recently started kissing boo boos.

She scolds the cats when they're doing something they're not supposed to, telling them (while wagging a finger, nonetheless), "No!" or "Down!".

She loves giving daddy hugs and big kisses, but then pushes him away as soon as she's done.

For a few weeks this winter, she would sing songs to me at bedtime. Now, right when she's about to get serious about going to sleep, she tells me "Ni' ni', Momma. I ya you." Sometimes, she wants to hold my hand as she falls asleep.

She tells us she loves us just out of the blue. It makes my heart swell with love every single time.

She is excited to put stuff in the trash.

This entire year, she has repeatedly gotten in trouble at daycare for taking off her shoes. Her caregiver always made it sound like it was the most serious crime a toddler could commit, which always amused me. I hope she always loves being barefoot and always finds comfort more important than a pretty pair of shoes.

She loves "helping" me make coffee. She sits on the counter and carefully puts scoops of beans in the grinder, helps me push the button, and then supervises as I pour it into the French press. She loves to help push down the press or, if I'm using the automatic maker, loves pushing the buttons.

She calls everything in a mug "tea".

She sings all the time. To me, to her babies, to herself. She has a beautiful voice.

I can't get her out of the car now that I've flipped the car seat to face forward. I bet we could drive to Timbuktu like that and she'd be as happy as a bird with a French fry.

She wants to dress herself. So far, she's pretty good at pulling on pants and getting shirts over her head. She's still struggling with finding the arm holes, though. Socks flat-out tick her off. Shoes... well... that's another issue entirely. She has a love/hate relationship with hats. Mostly, she doesn't like them. But the other day, she found her knit owl cap, proudly pulled it on her head, and played portait un chapeau for the rest of the evening.

There seems to be a tie for her favorite toy of the moment: Honey Joe, Teddy, and Bunny. Honey Joe was mine growing up, and has proven himself to be a wonderful companion for my little girl. Teddy was a gift from my mom - I don't remember if it was for me or for Squirt, but he is most decidedly her companion now. Bunny was an impulse buy right before Easter. She saw him when we were picking up groceries and dragged him through the store, refusing to leave him behind.

When Radar has an accident on the floor, Squirt comes running to me, pointing, and yelling "EEEW! Mama, eeeew!"

Her absolute favorite cartoon right now (and for the past few months) is, without any shadow of a doubt, "The Adventures of Tintin". Anytime you ask her if she wants to watch something, or whenever she gets the idea that she wants to watch something, no matter what else you might suggest, she squeals "Tintintintintintin, peeeeease!"

She loves to "help" wash dishes and fill up her own cup from the faucet. She also loves washing her hands with the foaming soap. Any of these activities usually involve mopping the floor after.

Sometimes she is quite the socialite when we go shopping. She will say "Hi, guy" to everyone we encounter. Once I corrected her, saying "Oh, Lily, that's not a 'guy', that's a 'lady'." So now she will sometimes say "Hi, dee" to the complete stranger sharing our aisle.

Her favorite book right now is "Ten Little Ladybugs." We could read that literary masterpiece until the cows came home...

She loves, loves, loves to draw with markers or pens. Heck with crayons or pencils.

She loves to play out doors, especially if there are swings or slides involved. When we're home, she'll excitedly ask " 'Side? 'Side?" (outside) then try to put on shoes as she waits by the door. If, for some reason, she can't go outside, she'll pull a chair up to the door window and stand there, looking out.

She harvests and eats the sorrel in the back yard, calling it "my so-wul".

She makes up her own letters when singing her ABCs, but could sing it all day long.

She is such a compassionate caregiver to her "babies." She tucks them in, feeds them, kisses them, and sometimes even scolds them, but always gives them a hug and pats their backs saying "there you go".

She loves to dance. She will dance enthusiastically and expressively to just about any song. When there is no music and she feels the groove, she will find a rhythmic beat in any sound (like the washing machine) and shake it. I hope this never fades.

When I was busy trying to get something done (I don't even remember), she kept bugging me: "Mom! Momma! Mommy! MOM!" When I finally turned and asked what, she smiled, said "I ya you", gave me a hug, and ran off to play. <3

She asks "y'ok?" if she sees that someone got hurt or is sad. She wipes away others' tears.

 ~ ~ ~

There is so much more, and I'm sure I could go on for pages. She is such a remarkable creature, the love of my life. Happy almost birthday to my sun and stars, my very soul. I love you, Squirt.

Growing up so fast.

one week left

In just one short week, Squirt will turn two. I'm still amazed how this year flew by. It seems like just yesterday I was preparing for her first birthday! And just a wink before that, I was just getting to know this amazing little creature, marvelling at her teensy toes, her giant eyes, her - even in the belly - undeniable moxie. I've been reflecting on how much she's grown and changed, while so many things (such as her fiery pep) have remained the same.

Last night, we spent our evening in the garden, watering and talking about how all the little seeds were about to grow into different, wonderful plants. She helped herself to her current favorite snack - sorrel - and pranced gleefully through the yard. I think she's ready to be two.

"Harvesting" (aka helping herself to) the sorrel.

Pretty pleased about her snack!

*munch munch munch*

Squealing with laughter.

"Sit down, Momma! ... Peease."

"A plane!"

On to her next great adventure.

it's in the air

Spring is in the air! AND the winds haven't started up full-force (yet), so we've been trying to enjoy the pleasant hiatus between freezing cold and burning hot. Ms. Squirt has been eagerly taking every opportunity to play outside. We've been prepping and planning the garden, washing the cars, going on playdates - any excuse to get out and soak up some sun! Indeed, on Easter day we may have soaked up a bit too much, but nothing a little cod liver oil won't fix right up! So here are some glimpses of Squirt's recent comings and goings.

Still the diva.

Being silly after bathtime.

Reason #1 I'm often late to work...

Coolest kid in the park.

The Easter Bunny liked her so much, he decided to stay a while.
